shallots, soil and sweet peas
« on: February 02, 2011, 13:13 »
Shallots into pots yesday at school and then to chilly greenhouse.  Tried this last year and it worked well. 3 strong helpers dug out some of the clay soil in bed number 3. We've added some sandy soil so that carrots and parsnips will like it better.
Sowed some more sweet peas today and brought them inside to hurry them along!
Is it too soon to start chitting our first earlies....?

If you already have your seed potatoes it is easier to start chitting them now in suitable conditions than trying to stop them chitting!

(Ideal conditions are a cool, north-facing windowsill; too much heat and/or light will speed things up too much, but above all you must avoid subjecting them to frost.)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Thing is, too much light probably also equates to a south-facing window, which then possibly equals too much warmth! Don't worry about it unduly; you could always move them somewhere a bit cooler if you think they're going too wrinkly too quickly!  :)
