ill chicken
« on: February 01, 2011, 20:25 »
Hi.
One of my chickens seems quite ill.
She isn't really eating anything at all and has had a dirty bottom for about 5 days or so.
The pooh is VERY runny and almost pure yellow and quite smelley where it is stuck to her feathers, i have to clean her up daily.
She just sits there all puffed up and sleepy.

She is an ex battery hen which i have had for about 2 years.

Any ideas?

I have tried bathing my poorly ones (10-20mins in a warm sink) and sometimes that works. I also put them in the cat basket and kept them warm and in the dark. But as joyful says if this has gone on for sometime then you had best make a trip to the vets tomorro.

Its the smelly thats the worry honey. She could have an infection or be egg bound or anything

she eats a  small amount of grass and a few small worms and then that's it she doesn't want anything else from what i can see anyway.

I don't get to see her alot as the chickens are on my allotment.I go up every morning before i go to work to let them have at least half an hour roam around outside of their pen.
I am off tomorrow so will have lots of time to see what happens and if she is still the same i will call the vet.

She as been off on several occasions but this time she does seem quite ill

Oh,and the smell is like ammonia ?

by the time a chicken shows any signs of illness they are very ill so a vet is needed straight away.
