Just checked the incy as the automatic turner will get turned off in the morning and there it was.....stuck in the corner....and egg that had cracked from top to bottm due to expansion!

I candled it and the chick had died over the last few days and it was ready to explode!

Phew very close call!! (I bet it would have been pretty damned smelly as well!)

Well done for catching it!

I've had an egg explode in an incy last year (it was a Marans, and I couldn't see through the shell to see if it was viable or not), and it was absolutely disgusting!

Im sure the smell was horrendus! (sp)

Doesnt it contaminate the other eggs as well if it explodes? Cleaning must be pretty bad as well!

I was lucky, the others had already hatched, and I was just leaving it "one more day - just in case" unfortunately one more day was one day too long!

Cleaning the incy was a pain in the behind, though it was mainly plastic, so all plastic parts were soaked in a bleach solution with boiling water.

The incy still smelled this year when I swtiched it on again :blink: but after time it was OK... and is now awaiting some fresh eggs to go in.

That eggy backside smell certainly can linger!

Im just glad I did catch it because theres only 3 days left to go with this batch of eggs!

Would have been mortified if I had lost them being so close to hatch day!
