Is this an edible plant?.....
« on: August 06, 2007, 13:20 »
..... Looks like spinach to me. I didn't plant it, but it's thriving with no input at all. It's under the plum tree, so in full shade. Or is it a weed?

Jac

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

Hard to tell from your picture.  Might be sorrel.  Taste a wee bit to see if it tastes sour.  If you don't post a reply, the rest of us will all know it is poisonous.

Hi Jacal,
Please could you tell me how you  post your pictures on your posts so that when you click on the topic in the forum the pictures are on the post and do not have to follow a link in order to view the pictures. Like you have done in this post with the picture of the plant in which you don't know whether it is Spinach or a Weed. Thanks Matthew

I'm no expert, but that does look very like my perpetual spinach. I wouldn't have the courage to eat it though, if I hadn't planted it.

I agree Brucesgirl, it looks exactly like my perpetual spinach too.  Roll a bit up and stick it between your teeth and gums for five minutes, if no reaction, cook some and taste it.
Cheese makes everything better.

5 mins n you could have severe blistering of the lips and gums and also toxic poisoning .

break and smell it if it runs white sap do not go any further . tear a little off a leaf put  on the lips .if any reaction dump it wash with water , taste little on the tongue if any reaction  dump it .eat a little bit wait 4 hours . it should be safe to eat . but taking it to a nursery may be a safer bet .
but it sure looks like pep spinach as well to me ,
still alive /............

I'm sticking with sorrel as my guess.  She didn't plant it so I am guessing it has to be a perennial.  The stalk doesn't look like perp spinach (especially old perp spinach).
