chitting question!
« on: January 31, 2011, 21:46 »
i know you need sunlight and a cool frost free place to set your potatoes to chit, but i was told to keep them out of direct sunlight, why is this?
thanks

You'd probably grow ready-cooked spuds!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I believe it is because they might sprout too fast and too weakly.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

I believe its because the sprouts are long and thin and not particularly strong when put in direct sunlight, in a less sunny place you should get stubby thick sprouts which are stronger and more likely to be successful in the ground.  Remember to only leave on about three - four sprouts snap the rest off

I always chit on the windowsill in an unheated room and the sprouts are strong and compact. I suspect you may get some shrivelling of the potatoes if they are too warm in direct sunlight though.

I don't have an unheated room, so they have to live on the bedroom floor.  That is the coolest room in the house.  They do get enough light in there, so long as I remember to open the curtains.

Mine go in trays and up on to the tops of the kitchen cupboards, where they get light and not too much of it. I always get really nice thick chits there...

i read somewhere that you're supposed to give them a light mist of water to prevent them shrivelling... works for me
