Urgent: sick hen, please help
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:34 »
My speckledy is looking very poorly today - she's looked a bit ropey for a couple of weeks, but I just put it down to the moult, as she was mixing with the other hens and eating.

However, this morning I found her just standing by herself, with her eyes closed, showing the white film. She's very lethargic and feels cold. Her crop feels weird - sort of solid and squidgy, like blu tak. My husband said he saw some grass on her beak, as if she'd been eating grass.

I picked her up and put her with the other hens, where the food and water are. She drank a lot of water. She looks very weak and feels light (although she has been eating over the past few days).

Any ideas?

Hi VV, it sounds like it could be impacted crop, which I believe needs antibiotics, so either a vet visit or.....   she doesn't sound good though.

if you look at this page and scroll down it will show you how to deal with both impacted and sour crop problems.

Thanks for replies.

From the link, it sounds like impacted crop rather than sour crop (her crop feels more doughy than liquidy).

I gave her some liquid paraffin and massaged her crop. When I put her down again, she passed some greenish liquid (from her rear end, that is!).

Fingers crossed that she'll be OK - but she's looking very sorry for herself at the moment.
