Mine have also arrived this week, 3kg of Lady Christl and 3kg of vales sovereign. I was not too sure as to when i needed to start them chitting. I take it i should start now? Can they both be planted out at the same time?

I got 3kg of Duke of York and 3kg of Cara. I've just started chitting them as it is a bit too cold to store them in the garage and figure out that they probably would start chiting in the bag anyway.
I normally plant my potatoes mid April after the last frost wheather they are earlies or main crops.  I only got two years experience in allotment growing so still kind of a newbie but others more experience forum users might pop in for tips. Always worth asking.

Mid April will surely be well before the last frost. It certainly was last year!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine are happily chitting in the back porch :)
down where you are you should be able to plant your earlies in mid-late march, as long as you earth up if a late frost is forecast when they have grown through..I plant mine on 17th ;)

The others get put in between then and the middle of April.

Thanks for the advice mumofstig, gives me something to look forward to as I can't wait to be able to plant something soon.It keeps on raining here and can't do much at the plot at the moment, so frustrating!

If you want a really early crop and can offer them some protection you can pop some into a container and start them off in a greenhouse or conservatory. I did a couple of lots last year at the end of Feb/beginning of March and ate my first new potatoes on 28th May.

I started my outdoor spuds on 20th March in pre-warmed soil and covered them with fleece. Although we had some hard frosts after that they all survived.

Wish mine had!  Ordered a couple of weeks ago and getting impatient to chit!

My deep beds (50cm) are supposed to be planted with first earlies next month! Sounds really early to me, but I'm a newbie, so what do I know?  We can protect easily as each planter is small and can be wrapped up, so I'll give it a try.....
Good luck with your spuds,

Chysalis

February is way too early in my book.

Mid March at the earliest, but if I'd done that last year, I'd still have lost the lot, like a lot of my fellow plot holders.

Don't be too eager, so often we've seen it lead to tears.

I planted 5 Lady Chrystl in a cold frame today as an experiment.

I hope they do well.

There's a couple on here couldn't get hold of them this year to give them a decent burial!

I think I am going to do one row of earlies mid March, another early April and then wait until late April - mid May, probably a bit staggered to put the rest in.  I am going to be strict with myself this year.  I don't mind losing a couple of rows but I had a very poor crop last year. :(

I planted on St Patricks day last year (Mar 17th) because I had heard it was the traditional day for planting but I still managed to lose half a row to frost. I think I will leave it until April 1st and hope I am not made to look like a fool this year ;)
