It has been made much simpler nowadays, there are only 3 seasons.
Spring, Autum and Winter

Ah but sometimes the other one will spring upon you when you least expect it!!

That's slightly harsh! :D I would have said (where I am now), Winter mid-October - mid February, Spring mid-February - end April, Summer May - August, Autumn September and 1st half of October.

It doesn't matter precisely where the lines are drawn, the unfortunate fact is that the main growing season in the UK is (arguably!  ::)) from April to September (inclusive) which is only half a year, and for many of us the reliably frost-free part of that is only June to September!  :(

That's why cloches, cold frames, greenhouses (and window sills!) were invented, and of course forums like this one; to help growers squeeze the absolute maximum out of our less than ideal climate!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Global warming may well result in more frequent wetter / colder winters for the UK as the Gulf-stream is pushed away from its normal route.

I thought that spring was when you could put your bare bottom on the soil and it didn't feel cold!   :D

According to a chum of mine there are only two seasons in Toronto, Canada: Winter ... and Construction!
