Compost/Fertiliser
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:43 »
Just another quickie... :tongue2:

What is best to do when planting seeds, plants and canes for the first time on the allotment, which has been usused for a year, in terms of fertilising the soil with bought compost/manure etc?

Regards

Rick

Get as much as you can as cheaply as you can, dig it in and wait for wireworms to eat your spuds (for the next couple of years anyway)!   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

OK, LOL

So any compost is better than none I take it you are saying, what about something like the levington farm manure?

Sorry, just realised the manure will fertilise and isn't compost and shouldn't used until Sep.

So, in short, what is best to dig in while seeding and planting out over the next couple of months?

If you are using stuff like horse muck, people tend to chuck it onto their beds over the winter and leave for the worms to incorporate it. You could of course dig it in yourself. For spuds - add it to the bottom of the trench you plant your spuds in or the hole you plant your squash or pumpkin. If you are using other types of fertiliser then chuck it on when things are starting to grow in the spring and then follow the instructions for how much and how often from then on.
