Yes they work really well and i keep the bottoms for mini seed trays.  I love the storage idea im deffinately going to try that as the OH is fed up with my crate of "dont recycle that its for the allotment!" that sits on the fridge

great storage idea  -  i often upturn the bottles, push into the ground underplants, especially pumpkin tomatoes .and courgettes, fill with water and it will seep slowly into the ground

Add some chicken manure pellets and it allows you to "feed" the plants every time you water - worked well for my squash last year. That said I did tend to let the rain do much of the watering.

yep we use various 2lt and some 3lt drinks bottles. When used as short cane toppers they dont half rattle at times, not a problem on an allotment maybe but fortunately our neighbours have never complained yet. I just need to find the right music to play on a windy night so they can become part of the percussion section   :D

Beware of staking the bottles too tightly on a cane.

...... When used as short cane toppers they dont half rattle at times, ........

I have bottles on top of 8ft canes hoping they do rattle. Its seems to help keep the moles out of the plot as they rely on vibrations in their tunnels to find earthworms. If a molehill appears in the plot it gets a cane pushed down through it and a bottle put on top.

Lets hope they don't get to like the music.

Now this is where I have always failed to see the logic of those commercial vibrating mole deterrents.

moles rely on vibrations to detect earthworms ! ergo, creating more vibrations attracts more moles to the plot surely.

Is my logic illogical Spock    :D

Now having gone that route, in order to keep this 'on topic' whats the diameter of a mole tunnel in comparison to a 2lt or 3lt plastic bottle, maybe they could be used to create dead ends

Lots of extraneous vibration means they can't hear the earthworms.

Alternatively if they think it is an earthworm they'll be very disappointed when they get to the source of the vibration. After they've run down that tunnel  about 50 times they might get p155ed off and go somewhere else.

I ask at my local sweet shop for their used sweet jars, apparently they do not reuse them. Suits me anyhow as I cut off bottom and use them as collars around my veg and they are bigger. Neck is deep and screws into the ground well too.

Can also be used to scare birds.
Cut a 3 sided Panel in side of bottle which is then bent outwards.
Do this 3/4 times.
Drill hole in the bottom and insert cane.
Screw up some bits of tin foil and put inside bottle.
When the wind catches the panels the bottle spins and the tin foil rattles.
Make sure you bend all the panel the same way.

Hope no one minds my resurrecting this thread, thought I would just add a tip to it that some may not already have thought of. I am sure many have though.

A use for  2 Lt plastic bottle bottoms.

Using a craft knife cut the bottom of the bottle off, there is sometimes a line around the bottle you can use as a guide. Craft knife gives better cut than scissors.

When sowing seeds in 4inch pots the base of old bottles will act as a mini  pot cloche.
Make small hole in centre IF  ventilation required
