150 square meters of land
« on: January 22, 2011, 12:03 »
We are considering buying a property with 150 square meters of planting land (vegtables). There is also a greenhouse 8mx3m and a tunnel 10mx3m. We would like to use this land as an income. We have only grown vegetables on a small scale. Does anybody else have something similar? And any other points such as outlay, time spent and income if any.

Thankyou

James and Donna :)

I'll move this to GYO as the question is more aimed there.

Please pop back to the Welcome forum and tell us a bit about yoursleves.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Don't expect a lot of income off 150m sq m.

That is half one of my plots and to be honest would not keep my smallish family going.

The greenhouse & polytunnel may be a different matter, but you are quite likely to have a surplus of one particular veg like tomato, (yes I know it's a fruit), rather than a choice, and you'll need to have the demand to fulfill your supply.

I agree with DD.
A standard allotment size is 300 sq metres, a lot of the old council plots are that size,
and are supposed to be just big enough to keep a family of 4 self sufficient in vegetables throughout the year.

Are the greenhouse & polytunnel on this land, if so they actually take up about 1/3 of it.

Before I moved my old plot was 150 Sq Metres and it didn't keep Mrs FB and I though the year. It did in essentials such as  Onions and Spuds but by the time I have sowed these two crops then well over half my space was gone. It will help that you have the G/House and tunnel on separate land, the tunnel will help extend your season by about 6 weeks at either end. On my 150 metres I had my G/house and shed.

But you will be able to feed your family for the largest part of the year with fresh produce.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I note you refer to 'income'.  If you mean financial income or using the ground in any way which isn't directly for domestic consumption, double check the planning permission side of things before you make any irrevocable decisions.

Under intensive cultivation you should be able to get 1+ pound of produce per square foot on average. 150 square metres gives you roughly 1500 square feet. So if you sold it at £1 per pound it's not much of an income.  With some crops you might get more but with others it would be much less.

I have a small patch of about 500 square feet in which I produce approx 500/600 lbs of fruit and veg. per year and this doesn't quite feed the three of us.
