Help for Hetty please- RIP
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:47 »
Hi Hetty is about 2 years old we got her as a rescue hen last March, for the last 3 days she has been a bit sluggish, but today she is very slow, she has eaten, her eyes and nostrils are clear, but her poohs are just a thick white dribble and only a small amount which has left her with a messy skirt, I felt under her vent to see if that was swollen but I think it feels the same as another hen. Also the tops of her combs are slightly darker could this be heart or a sign of stress? Not sure what to do but I think it should be a trip to the vets :( any ideas thankyou. :( :(

when did she last lay? perhaps she has had an egg burst inside her - at her age she could still be laying the occasional egg and she may have had a softee, so yes I would get her to a vet as she may need antibiotics.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I dont think she has laid for a while as I am sure the eggs are from the other two, I did find a rubbery weird thing in the nest box yesterday which I assumed was a lash maybe that has taken it out of her? because we have had problems with softies from her before, its just this time I feel its a bit more?

Did the vet not inject her with a/bs as this is the best way to get a/bs in her if she's not eating or drinking much?

It sounded a classic EYP case.  Quick and accurate diagnosis from Joy there.

The best of luck

Thanks for your replies, she is looking a little perkier this morning after 2 days of anti-biotics, the vet said she had a strong heart and lungs and is fit as a fiddle apart from this little problem! The vet didn't inject her but she is eating very slowly and drinking, he is a good vet because he has his own chickens and if they have problems and die he does an autopsy on them, so he is always learning! :)

Sounds like you have a useful vet there so you will be in good hands.

Best wishes

Hi thought I would let people know the good news, so far Hetty has responded well to the anti-biotics and day by day she is becoming herself again, I was amazed even though she was quite poorly she was still top hen! She is know scoffing down her food, running after me for more treats and dust bathing, its definately a relief  :D
