Critter Identification
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:44 »
Hi All,
I posted this photo last year and no one seemed to know what the critter is and more importantly does it damage my crops.

As a guide I  find it underground and usually in my spud patch, but I have found it all around the plot. So it might not be solely a spud pest.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

isn't that a centipede?
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Looks like a centipede - they mainly eat other insects but if their food is in short supply will eat vegetable matter and that may include your veggies but in the long run they probably do more good than harm.

I think it's probably this one.

Apparently it's the only British centipede known to cause some damage to plant roots, although personally I'd leave it alone as it probably does as much good as harm (most centipedes are garden "good guys", millipedes much less so.)

Springlands: "snap" (nearly!)  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
