Too late for Garlic planting?
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:17 »
I put quite a few garlic in last year end of October I think then brought another batch to go in but because of constant rain, snow etc it didn't get planted. Is it too late to put them in or am i right in thinking they can go in in March? Thanks

I planted some Garlic in late Feb last season. The crop I got was okay, but the bulb sizes were all on the small side.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

get them planted as soon as poss........the size of bulbs will depend on feeding and summer weather as much as anything else. There's still plenty of winter left for them to get the cold period necessary for them to bulb :)

In extremis (ground not ready) you could put them in individual 3" pots, outside so they get the cold, and then plant out when ground is suitable/available.

(I think John has a video about that somewhere)

I recently got my hands a few bulbs for next to nothing and planted x30 cloves in the ground over the weekend.

I have little to loose, will see how they get on.

If you can dig your soil now, put the garlic in now. It does need a fair bit of time in very cold weather in soil.

If you can't dig yet, start them in pots then transfer to soil later. Here's some tips:

Managed to rotavate my soil today with the Mantis (which surprised me!) so the bit where the spuds were last year can get my just-arrive Garlic in tomorrow :)

I recall reading on here a couple of years ago (sorry, too lazy to search for the original post) that some people put their garlic in the fridge to ensure it gets its "cold units". As I couldn't get mine in the ground before Christmas I've followed that advice, now got roots developing  Methinks it's time to get it in the ground !  :)

I have to agree with Trillium on this one.

If you can turn the soil over plant them straight in - but I planted in pots initially last year than re-planted and I have done the same this year. I only planted mine in late december and left them.

Also did this last year and got great size garlic plus the roots develop really well in the pots.

Hubby went down yesterday & everything is really wet. Apparently pigeons have eaten everything in sight apart from my leeks. Purple sprouting has all but disapeared not happy! Think my garlic will have to be started in pots so will get going on that at the weekend. Thanks for all your input much appreciated  :)

I planted mine in pots before Christmas cos the grounds been frozen solid up here since November. I've never grown garlic before but the roots it put out in the pots is unbelievable! So mean time I've transplanted then into 3" pots until mother nature decides I can get them planted outside

I planted garlic in the autumn for three years running and they rotted off. I have planted in late January for the last couple of years and got very acceptable crops

Some of the seed garlic I have planted actually says it can be planted late autumn of early spring. Last year I put some shallots in in Jan and they did ok - give it a go. I would guess the worst that is likely to happen is that they are slow to come up.
