I just bought some John Innes Seed compost and it is full of twigs!

I think I will go to B n Q for my next batch, judging by the general consensus! :)

Note - 'John Innes' is a TYPE of compost, not a brand.

why not make your own compost with coir or peat if you want even buy in ready made compost from your councils and mix the fertiliser to suit yourself. if you search ,make your own compost by muntjac you will find many recipes 8)

The only problem with some council made compost is what is in it as some add wood that has been treated.

good point cakebaker :)  asking first may solve that problem for those that need to worry about it  the stuff i have had over years does not seem to have done any harm ;)
still alive /............

wickes 75 litre 4 for £13. nice and crumbly, no 'big bits' only downside is it might not be as water-retentive as i'd like, but that might be the warm weather. i've bought at least 20 so far.

I used one bag of J Arthur's and it was fine, went to a different garden centre and got 3 bags for £10 and the 1st one I opened was rubbish, it was full of all sorts of wood and stringy bits. I didn't bother opening the other 2 bags and took them back and swapped them for potting compost

I quite agree.  We had four for the price of three from the garden centre and it's rubbish - full of stringy stuff and hair balls!  OK for earthing up the pots in bags, but not good for much else.  Won't buy that again :tongue2:

mix my own using clover grow bag and sterilized soil made from compost heap 1 part grow bag 3 parts compost then sieved through a 1/4 sieve.
Works for my toms, cucumbers, Find clover grow bags best as not a lot of rubbish left  in sieve.
Dave.
I'll beat this heavy clay yet. now almost there works well now

I am so fed up with awful bag after bag of compost,I haven`t had a good one yet.I`ve tried all sorts from Lidl,B&Q,Focus,Morrisons, wherever.I`ve been riddling all the bits of plastic, twigs, wood that looks treated ,and even what looks like clumps of horsehair!so probably from old furniture or fencing....I add a smaller proportion of loam based to make it more manageable and less fluffy, and I`m managing to keep most things alive.

My own compost doesn`t seem to have rotted down enough, and the cow manure I had from last year is still sticky in the middle.ew :tongue2:

At the end of last season my husband brought me 20 bags from Asda that they were selling off at 1/2 price and I am just using the last one now.

Has anyone tried the bags from this year? as I will grab any I see at the end of this season if they sell off again.
