starting in paperpots this year
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:18 »
hi one and all,  gonna start stuff of this year in paper pots any boday doing the same?

my onion sets struggled last year so making loads of pots for them, start in greenhouse for a bit first, then transplant out, is this ok?

done it all ready with my elephant garlic, and the smaller  ones, thought this worked well last year,

I will do but not for a couple of months yet at least!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I don't grow onions - or at least haven't done for years.  I do have some free onion seed this year but it says start it off in Feb so I'll do that in proper pots rather than paper ones

I find newspaper pots a reasonably faff to do ... so I only do them for things that hate being transplanted, or need really deep pots - my paper pots are generally 6" - 7" deep, but only 2" or so diameter. I find them ideal for:

Parsnips (about 50)
Sweetcorn (about 100)
Sweet peas (about 100)

but that's it! the rest get ordinary, reusable, plastic pots ...

I'm with you there, Kristen. For onions, leeks, sweet peppers, etc. I prefer to use used food container with tall sides which I've punched in or drilled some drainage holes in bottom. The tall clear salad trays are great for this as the lid can act as a mini greenhouse for a while. These crops need a longer growing period inside and the plastic containers hold up better with giant root masses. When done, I put them in the recycle box and save new ones the following year.

It really doesn't matter about the ink Rich. Any newspaper is fine.

I'm using a lot of paper pots this year but this is because of cost more than anything else.

I use nothing but paper pots. I start making the when the nights are drawing in and stash them until they're needed. I have this strange phobia with reuseable pots they seem to multiply and take over :(

I think all inks now are fine (based on vegetable dies), but I would avoid glossy paper as I don't think it will break down so easily.

I use tabloid because a double sheet folded in half horizontally top-to-bottom (rather than vertically as per how the pages turn) gives a pot about 6" - 7" tall - which suits me for deep rooted things. I used to use broadsheets and cut them up ... but I weaned myself off having to do that!

I've this morning transplanted (most of) my caulis & calabrese into 3" deep paper pots (in a bid to combat clubroot), they look happy enough this evening  :)
Already got my peas in paper pots  :)
