block compost
« on: December 05, 2010, 14:35 »
i was sorting out the potting shed yesterday and i found my old block maker does anyone know if block compost is still sold and by who

i used to set quite a few seed in blocks i don't know why i packed up doing it that way there must have been a reason

the same goes for compost  i made my own compost some years ago i would buy a giant bail of peat a bag of additives some sharp sand and mix up i suppose it was easier to buy it ready made when i was busy does any one still make there compost this way :)

I make my own potting compost as I grow lots of stuff in containers and need to tailor the compost to suit the crop. Cabbages and carrots have different needs and this is not easy to achieve with commercial composts. I did make my own seed compost but it's a bit of a faff sterilizing stuff in the oven so I now buy a big bag of JI and find that does the job for small seeds. For big seeds like beans, etc. I use potting compost mixed with sand.
