caring for my asparagus plants
« on: November 30, 2010, 14:33 »
In articles on what to do when the foliage dies back the advice given is to cut down the stems in autumn, leaving 5cm stumps above the ground. Does anyone know why you should leave stumps?

Leaving stumps behind ensures you didn't cut too close to the crown (main root) itself and that you've also left enough soil in place to keep the susceptible crown covered. come spring you'll not even notice a stump remaining.

I cut my foilage down to stumps (as Trillium says), and then cover the whole lot with manure - this protects them in winter, and also feeds them when they start growing :D

I rarely remember to mulch mine before the winter and they're at least 6 years old now (although I have lost the odd one or two in that time.)

They should be OK as long as they haven't got to put up with waterlogging as well as the cold.
(Mine are now mulched with 6 inches or more of snow - and counting!!!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

This morning my plants are mulched with about 2 feet of snow!! They are in a raised bed so hopefully the drainage is OK allow it is only their first year so I am a little worried.

When this clears is it best to put the compost on now and go with the manure in spring or vice versa?

My asparagus beds (2) are raised, and they were perfectly ok after last year's winter (we don't usually get a lot of snow around Manchester) and we had a good foot of snow :D.  In fact I got a really nice crop this year. :D

So don't worry about them, they'll survive.

Thank you that is very reassuring. I have spent so much time on them it would be tragic if I never got to taste them!
