chicken jumpers
« on: November 27, 2010, 22:12 »
Having seen patterns for chicken jumpers, my dc are keen for me to knit a couple for ours.
I'm not sure however whether I would be doing them a disservice as they couldnt
puff up their own feathers if they are restricted by a jumper. The patterns are for ex batts,
with few feathers.....no one seems to say whether they should be used on fully feathered
chickens.
We like knitting, and are concerned that our coop seems rather thin in this cold weather,
but I'm not sure whether to make these or not.

any advice welcome, thankyou.

they are only for chickens that are missing their feathers not for fully feathered birds. Your girls will be fine with their own feather duvets  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks, that's what I thougt.
If we still feel like knitting, we'll send them to an ex batt rescue charity!

Hi

Would you please tell me how I can get my paws on the patterns?

My neighbour's chicken has moulted badly so her new feathers are really scrappy and not warm at all! She spends her time under a fatter and better feathered bird - a woolly jumper could keep her cosy.

PS She's 9! (The chicken, not my neighbour.)

Sorry to put a damper on things but when i got my first lot of girls from the ex bat people i was told that not to give them jumpers no matter how bad they look as it can stop the new feathers from growing and it just prolongs the prosses of getting new feathers.

strange that as this rescue place are asking people to help make jackets - these ones are made of fleece and not knitted.

Now!  Somthing I do know about is chicken sweaters.  :D  I've knitted both the chux tux and the poncho style one.

The chux tux is a more substantial garment, and definitely the most interesting one to knit,  :D  but it's a nightmare to get on.  Even with an obliging chook, you'll probably need two people or risk a damaged wing.

The style preferred by the little hen rescue people is basically a ponch, which can be knitted or can be made out of fabric, is much simpler and far easier to get on the girlies

I knitted both last year for my Tilly, who hadn't regrown her feathers, and got through that awful winter with bare bum and just quills everywhere else.  But she still coped, so we didn't use the sweaters afterall.

Have to say that I would have been a bit concerned about the safety aspect of them wearing a garment.  Very easy to get caught up and snagged?  And can't imagine buttons lasting very long.  I risk mine everytime I go there.  Those girls are always trying to steal them.
