egg storage
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:38 »
where do people keep their eggs, I am currently keeping them in the fridge but wonder whether the garage would be better although at the moment its nearly as cold as the fridge! Worried the kitchen might be too warm, interested to hear what others do

I keep mine in the (unheated) utility room, which is on the north side of the house so it's cool even in Summer.

But we get through the eggs pretty quickly, so they're rarely around for more than about a week.

I keep mine in the kitchen on a egg skelter but they don't stay there for long. :)

Keep mine in an egg tray on the worktop but again like others they are not there any more than a week if that.
I want a posh helterskelter but can't find one that holds about 25 eggs  ::)

I keep mine on the egg skelter in the kitchen.  Ma Lowe, I think my egg skelter holds about 24 eggs.
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

General advise is to keep them at room temperature and certainly not in a fridge, this is because variations in temperature when in or out of the fridge can cause problems.  Personally I keep them in the kitchen in egg boxes rounded end down, bringing the oldest to the front of course

I have just been on the Food Standards Agency website and current  recommendation is to keep them in the fridge.

I did my food hygiene certificate last year, and the advice there was to keeps eggs refrigerated, but I think they're better for cooking if they're not too cold.

I keep mine in the kitchen on the worktop , chefs recommend you dont put them in the fridge as the shells are pourous and they take on other smells from the fridge. :)

The eggs that we sell to our friends are kept in the fridge in the outhouse as per Food Standards guidelines, the fridge is only used for eggs so they won't absorb flavours from other contents.  Eggs for our own consumption are kept on the kitchen side but they're only there for a few days at a time as we just bring a couple in at a time.  If I know I need more than just a couple I being them in out of the fridge for a couple of hours before I need to use them as eggs are better cooked when not chilled, especially for meringues.

Mrs Skiprat keeps our eggs in a small basket on top of the worktop, and has done for the last 15 yrs or so on the advice of a very good chef. Even at the height of summer when temperatures get rather high in our kitchen we have never had any problems. To the poster who mentioned that they seem taste better when used at room temp, I fully agree with you.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
