I've only got a quarter plot, so no shed or greenhouse to shelter in. Add a site entrance that is not very accessible in poor weather, lots of snow and 2 small children at home and the result is that I've not been to the plot for a good few weeks.

I've got leeks that are frozen into the ground but I'm hoping to get there for my Christmas sprouts. Just as well that I froze the summer gluts !

I agree with Jon, though, that it's the people I miss most.

My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I only got this plot in May, so was thrilled when I bumped into one of the OBs this morning, he said the OBs agree that I had the best winter cabbages on the site and had done very well for my first year. I am soooo chuffed, silly I know, but I am

Roll on next year ;)

Well done indeed - I reckon brassicas are quite hard to get good.

themoog - see you're in N Wales too :) Don't worry, the snow's over the tops of my boots here :(

Even as an experienced grower, I learned a lot from other plotholders. Sometimes I'd think "that will never work" and a few months later I'd be so glad I hadn't said it out loud. The social mix on the allotment site was great as well - from the builder who would tell me how to do a job properly to the doctor who would explain things the GP had said.

Lucky I've a web site full of lovely people with brains to pick! :)

I left mine at work for the holidays!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

What I miss is some of the humour. One O.B on our site was looking after his son s plot.He was picking "catties" off the cabbages and he that it reminded him of his childhood. His dad grew veg in the back garden and one year the cabbages were infested with"catties"He was told for every one he collected he would be given a penny.diligently he pick of all of them and got paid for it.No more"catties"no more money ,so he went to the local allotments  and collected them there and took them home to dad!

Welcome to the site Kenny, we're very bonkers here so it should feel almost as though you're on the plot!

Thanks Lacewing for the advice on the Broad Beans.  I think I'll wait until the snow has gone and then plant them.  :D

Dug trench for sparragrass ,Scared pigeons off lots of plots, serious damage being done to all brassicas not netted.Fed robin,he helped himself to insects on what I had dug, then fed him bread crumbs. What is it about robins and fork/spade handles, posers or what. How many times have you seen pictures of them on fork/ spade handles.Get out there ,you know you want to!!!!!

Yes I know what you mean. I love it when "odd" approaches then do deliver the goods against expectation and other people's views. I am far from experienced and was a little nonplussed one of the committee earlier in the year laughed at my parsnip sowing, saying it would never work, and rattled off reasons (mainly along the lines of "I've never seen it done that way, so it won't work!!)...yet I had a full set of wonderful parsnips......

Mixing with and chatting to other folk at the allotment is such a joy, and the odd gem of an idea you can suddenly have when chatting with them is priceless.
