April  ??? .........It all starts before April in this house! Some of the earliest indoor sowings are directly after Christmas.....and if you are not counting indoor/windowledge sowings...then the first direct sowings are in early March for me ;)................weather permitting of course!

some varieties of cauliflower & cabbage can be sown for early summer harvest.
Likewise some early lettuce varieties, and some people sow the slow germinating varieties of chillies early as well.
Onion seeds (not sets).

All will need protection from the cold to germinate and then to be grown on in cold frame or greenhouse till they can be planted out.
(Chillies to stay in the warm indoors though) ;)

Thanks MOS.  Do you know what sort of Cabbage and Cauliflower?  I am conscious I don't much in my allotment at the moment, so wouldn't mind some early starters in the cold frame.  I wonder if also I could get away with planting broad beans (in seed tray modules in the cold frame then). We won't have many so don't mind the additional faf rather than planting straight out in Spring.  I didn't bother earlier outdoors as I lost the lot last year.    :)

I know there are a few varieties for early sowing, but the ones in my seed box that say they are suitable, are Greyhound cabbage, and caulis Clapton and Andes. I will do just a few of each for some early crops..fingers crossed ;)

I don't grow BBeans,  so can't advise.........perhaps someone else has grown them in the cold frame .......................

The next growing season starts on Monday - why are so many people only growing for half a year? Very odd.

Onions, garlic, chilis, tomatoes, round peas, broadies, lettuce and salad leaves, spring onions, brassicas, beetroot can all be sown in the next 2 months; and that's just off the top of my head.....

Probably because some of us don't have greenhouses or cold frames to protect or bring them on.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Or even warm enough windowsills!

The broad bean Aquadulce Claudia is the best variety for overwinter, and I'm sure would do fine if sown in a cold frame now. I sowed some out in the ground the first week in November, they were just showing above the ground when the frost and snow came, now the snow has cleared, I can see they have come to no harm.

There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I'm confused zazen... What's growing on the top of your head?

I have very late - almost forgot - give it a go Broadbeans in pots in a cold-frame but too cold here in the sunny south for anything else.  ;)
