Eggs
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:58 »
Hello All, I am new to chucks and would love some info please on when my Buff Orps might lay an egg they were hatched on the 1st May this year, I have had them since July so they are now 29 weeks and not an egg in sight. They have a large garden 50 metres or so to roam freely all day and a quite small coup for night time. Does anyone think the house might be too small ?? I have a trio as I thought this would make a good start to my chicken empire lol.  Any info at all would be very much appreciated, also I was thinking of getting an older hen to show them how its done ??? Y/N

purebreeds often do't lay until they reach 35 weeks and even then they can wait until spring when the days get longer  :). Don't worry it will be worth the wait.
Welcome to the forum by the way  :D

Orps aren't very prolific layers so I doubt they will lay now until the days start to lengthen in early spring.

found out today that orpingtons, brahmas and big breeds dont often begin laying before 6-8 months, so dont worry too much!!
