raising chicks for the table
« on: November 17, 2010, 17:15 »
hi all,

i have 12 meat birds at nearly five weeks old. they have just finished a sack of chick crumbs and my mate has givem me a sack of turkey2 grower pellets. will these be ok or will they be too strong or too high in protein at this age (the chick crumbs dont satisfy them now) they are Sasso chicks and are as strong as anything, is turkey2 okay?

any help gratefully received,

thanks

We've never given turkey grower to our meat chicks and vice versa, but I don't actually know if the turkey stuff will harm your meat chicks.

If you didn't want to waste it, perhaps mix it with the chicken rearer or grower, then like Teapots said put them onto finisher around 8 weeks or so.  We don't cull our meat chickens now unil they are 12-16 weeks.

hi, thanks both, now showing my ignorance, is turkey 2 a finisher? I've had egg birds for a few years but this is my first time with table birds. i dont want them to pile on weight like Cobbs, they are going to free range up to 16 weeks for flavour. mabe ordinary growers would be better or as pointed out a mixture?

What make is it?  I think the BOCM Paul's feed has a turkey rearer 1 and 2 and a turkey finisher 1 and 2, and finisher number 2 is for turkeys that will be culled after 20 weeks, whereas turkey finisher 1 is for turkeys that will be culled younger, but we haven't used BOCM for nearly 2 years now, so I could be wrong
