Sprouts for Christmas ?
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:46 »
I have never grown sprouts before so at the moment my sprouts on the plants are the size of a large pea. Will they be ready for Christmas and what can I do to help them get bigger ?

Please be more patient..............it's very bad forum manners to bump your thread like this!
and it's against site policy
If someone knew the answer they would have replied already. I don't grow sprouts so can't help.

There's not so many people around during the day.............so you'll just have to wait until someone who can help comes along...............................................................

hi hubballi, i suppose there a late sprout variety.?you could give them a light sprinkle of growmore around the base of each plant to give them a boost.theres six weeks or so left till crimbo so they can come on quite alot yet..what variety are they out of interest and when did you put them in? :)

Sorry, can't remember which variety they were/are. Already fed with BFB and Chicken Manure. Just hope they come on in time. Still, can harvest the leaves to eat.

Sorry, didn't realise about thread bumping rules.

Sorry, didn't realise about thread bumping rules.

All of the site policies can be found here, might be worth a read  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Hubballi... try not to worry about the size of your sprouts, mine were planted really late and a couple of weeks ago they were still small.
Last Sunday we had some of them for dinner as they had grown so much... Depending on variety they tend to be a winter veg and are normally ready just in time for Christmas.
So there is still plenty of time yet... I'm sure they will be ok..  :) :)

There are early, mid and late winter season sprouts but they should be ok for Crimbo unless you want to start boiling them now...
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My neighbour told me to cut the flowering head off, I now do this every year at different times, it focusses all the energy into the sprouts not the`flower.  You can see the difference between the plants with heads cut and those without so Im convinced it works!!

I've never had flowers on my sprouts but then this is only my second season growing them. Mine look eatable now, although I haven't tried them yet  - Maximus and Doric.

Sorry flower is not the right word!  I mean the little cabbage like head at the top of the plant, looks just like a mini cabbage!  Apparently you can eat it but mine is full of whitefly and whitefly poo so not the most appetising looking cabbage!

Thats interesting about cutting the tops off. Seems a bit harsh but might give it a go.

The problem is my plants are small and quite close together in a part of the garden not getting much sun. The broccoli tower over them which is a problem I didn't foresee when planting. The outer plants are about half the size again but all have tiny sprouts growing.

Would a feed with liquid comfry help ?

I very recently watched a gardening program and they suggested removing all the older lower leaves but to leave the young crown on the top
