Identification of evil plant destroyer needed!!!
« on: November 08, 2010, 20:33 »
Hi!

My plants on my patio have benn systematically destroyed this year...and I am stumped to the cause! My climbing Jasmin was eaten, had fine silk cocoons on it and then turned brown and died, and even the new growth is getting eaten. Another climber with glossy green leaves looks like I have been burning it with cigs but its def the same thing that got the jasmin as the little cocoons are on it. Also my Castor Oil plant is now near deaths door and the first photo shows what is sucking the life out of them all but can anyone identify it and advice!!!! It was about 1 inch long, and resembled a cross between a squid and earwig!!!!

The picture shows a butterfly or moth pupa. So there must have been caterpillars around earlier which probably have eaten your plants. The pupa will overwinter and in spring a new butterfly or moth will emerge.

Unsure if this is similar to the UK jasmine scoffer, http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Middle_East/Turkey/photo70311.htm

Too pretty to be evil. :D
