Autum Planted Peas and Onions
« on: November 03, 2010, 14:40 »
Can anyone advise me (my first year of late planting), my Onions are through about 5 inches and Peas are just coming through.

Should I be protecting them in any way ready for the winter. They are in raised beds.

I should keep an eye/ear to the weather forecast and chuck a fleece over them (onions that is) should the bimbo talk about frost.   Peas,  no idea,  the same I should think.

My late peas are at the flowering stage, after a couple of frosts, I wonder if I shall get any peas?  Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Hard to say with no bees to pollinate. Wind pollination can be iffy. If nothing else, you've got a nice crop of tender greens to harvest for salads.

they both should be ok uncovered in all but the hardest winters.

They won't grow much.........they'll just hang about until the weather warms up a bit in spring.

winter onions doesnt need any mollycoddling at all.
our winter onions had survived last winter with a foot of snow over it. Still gave a bumper crop!
peas hit and miss I would assume. couple of varieties (kevlon wonder I think) are self fertile and they can produce pods. but the ones which needs pollinators might need some "helping hand"
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Main problem with peas is getting them through the winter without something eating them before you do! Netting will keep the birds off but keep an eye open for slugs and snails.

Peas are not only self-fertile but excellent self-pollinators (not quite the same thing.)

A little movement of the stems to shake the pollen helps (as with tomatoes) but this will happen naturally outdoors.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Peas don't need pollination by insect or wind; by the time the flower opens, the pea has pollinated itself...as the process is self contained within the flower.
