Huge parsnips
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:37 »
Hi

Had been having trouble with parsnips growing really well then hitting harder soil and then turning into several roots with little useable parsnip.

This year however we dug a huge pit about 2 feet deep and filled it with a mixture of loosened soil, spent potting compost and a little sand.  We then transplanted our toilet rolls with seedings into said ground.

Well we have dug our first parsnip (having had a frost) and wow - how long and fat - well worth the extra digging effort - judging by first results we could have more parsnip than we know what to do with.

Certainly will be doing the same next year.

This is my effort from last year I have not dug up any this year yet.  By the way the tiles are 33 cm squares.
I am not sure they quite match up to DD's efforts but I am quite proud of them.

Did anyone see Toby on GW growing show parsnips? A container of sand with a core of compost, 3 seeds planted then thinned to the strongest, water etc. and the parsnips grew the depth of the container and width of the compost core!!! Blooming HUGE!
Pretty impressive....but what a faff!
