Oleander - can it stay outside in Winter?
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:51 »
I have a nice Oleander in a large pot. We had a frost and it did not die (I forgot about it!), so I thought could I leave it outside during the winter? I was told that I would have to bring it in.

Thanks.

I should imagine that, like any plant that thrives in the med, it would be the damp that caused a problem. A winter like last year would be a challenge. I wouldn't leave it out but someone may know different. Look forward to answers. :)

It won't mind a slight touch of frost, it won't mind getting soaking wet ...............BUT put cold and wet together, for more than a couple of days, and they just die...sorry :(

Mine go in the cold greenhouse  :)

Yep it's the damp that does for them - I've lost some during wet winters and I live in the Med! They don't mind a bit of cold but a prolonged frosty spell might also burn the leaves. You could perhaps get them out of the wet and chuck a fleece over to protect the tops.

Thanks for the advice.

I have a further question. I don't have a greenhouse, but do have a shed, although it is quite dark in there. Would it be OK to put it in the shed for the winter, on the basis that it will effectively "hibernate" or will it try and grow even in the dark?

Most plants do not like the dark - they become drawn and leggy.  I'd avoid it if possible.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If the weather is really bad and you have to use the shed, make sure the compost is not wet when you put it in as the roots may rot. If it is very cold it will not grow so shouldn't become leggy. But if you leave it in and the weather warms.....................

Thanks guys - advice noted. I will watch the weather like a hawk and put it in the shed only in really cold or prolonged cold/wet weather and bring it out at other times.
Wish I had a bleedin' conservatory or greenhouse!

It won't like the dark! Out of the wet and a  fleece bag should do it. Our neighbour has constructed a removable house for his tender babies out of plexiglass,  it all folds down for storage and even has a little roof on it!
