Bait for a Little Nipper
« on: October 30, 2010, 14:51 »
Hi I have a Mice problem in my shed.
I have bought a Little Nipper mouse trap and was wondering what bait should I use?

Not the most pleasant of topics I know but I have tried other methods but Mickey and Minnie won't go away.

Try sultanas - they are easy to stick on the spike. prick them with a cocktail stick to let the aroma out.

Bit of bread worked for me,although they have changed the design of the little nipper from old and I found the little blighters were able to remove some baits from the trap without triggering it ???.....using a doughy bread and kneading it into a paste so it stuck to the bait spike stopped their gallop though :tongue2:

I've found the best bait to put in any trap is the food they are going in to pinch.

You could also try this and it works brilliant for me.  Fill a bucket to within  3-4 inches of the top with wheat and leave in the shed for several days.  If and when you are sure the mice are eating from your bucket tip the wheat out and fill to the same level with water.  Then sprinkle wheat over the surface of the water and PLOP, but it takes no prisoners.

I have found that bits of jelly babies are good. They "stick" to the thing you stick the bait to and make it hard for the mice to remove it without triggering the trap!

We found that a bean-sized morsel from a nicely gooey flapjack seemed to overcome any vestigial traces of self-preservation among the little rodents, and ever since that has been our preferred and successful first choice.  Applies for both little nippers and Mrs HGB's humane traps (otherwise known as barn owl food containers).

I'd agree with BB, we've had our annual migration of mouses into the utility room for the winter so out came the traps. I used chocolate spread at first but they just licked them clean without setting them off!  :tongue2:

I then changed to a jelly sweet and got 12 mice in of 7 days out of 2 traps.  :D

Chooks enjoyed the extra protein as well.

We have a good mouser cat... so no need for traps.  He's currently bringing home 2 meese a day or there abouts.  Chooks just turn their nose up at them :O
