Did you know a Munchkin is a variety of cat?
I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

I just wish that our cats would go out and dig little holes for their business.

We put em out, and four hous later,  they're scrabbling at the door, and rush straight to their box        I think the earth must be too cold for their little bums   ::)

And oddly the cats are a lot more lithe with fewer aches and pains  :D

In Africa they use chilli to discourage elephants trashing their crops see http://news.softpedia.com/news/Elephants-and-Chili-Peppers-36035.shtml

Last year I had some success with detering mice that were eating my peas. I bought some hot chilli sauce from Asda called Daves insanity sauce, mixed a few drops with water in a plant sprayer and simply sprayed the ground. The mice stopped digging up my peas either because the smell was masked by the sauce or they did not like the effect of chilli when they dug! I guess cats would do the same. The sauce is way hotter than normal chilli - its great in sandwiches as well.

Water doesn't always work.... We also had a cat who loved the stuff...

but even though some cats don't mind getting wet or even bathing, I'm pretty sure they'll not like getting squirted with a high powered water pistol

I tested the hose on Shia today - she was beating up Martha puss - and within two seconds she was back in through the cat flap grumbling about the indignity of being sprayed and she is the one who loves water. So, yes water pistol/hose will work! It harms nothing but their ego  ;)

I hate cats so I'll not make any suggestions >:(.....one thing I do find though is that a significant proportion cat and dog owners are completely oblivious to the less pleasant aspects of their animals that they inflict on their neighbours..... >:( >:( >:(.

Dont know if these work.....might be worth a try though....(and possibly more cat friendly than some other suggestions which spring to (my) mind)

Try coffee grounds as a deterrent - early this year we switched to ground coffee and initially threw the used grounds under a large juniper bush, with no particular objective in mind. Local cats had long been of the habit of waiting under that bush to catch unsuspecting birds (grrrr) and we used to chase them off with water pistols.
However since starting to dump coffee grounds under there we hardly ever see cats in the vacinity of the juniper - coincidence or what?

I went to BnQ today and they had the sonic repellers and pesticides that are labelled as harmful to the environment yet directions are to scatter around raised beds to deter cats
So I bought nothing as I'm growing stuff organically. I secured the roof back on in a completely different way which is way more secure. That oughta fix the problem. I think I'll buy some cayenne pepper as that's supposed to be good and I'll scatter that around the yard.
