I got mine straightaway, 6 years ago now I think.

The council ones were all taken and they recommended a local association to me, and, luckily, there was one free.

when we signed up we were told 5-10 years, but due to some deaths and some people moving out of the area it took 18 months. Seems like other places are really quick!

I waited about 2 years for a plot to come up, this is going back 6 years ago. These days our waiting list is in excess of 100+ years which is totally obscene!

The allotment site in. Our last village didnt have a long waiting list all. When I called them I was the only person on the waiting list and it only took three months before I got a plot which I turned down due to family circumstances.  Then when I could I got back on the list, another plot was available immediately!

In our new village i was the only new person waiting, but there were other people with smaller plots looking to take on more or extend theirs, but it still only took a couple of months before I was offered one.

Either I've just been really lucky or for some reason the lotty craze hasn't reached our part of south Nottinghamshire for some reason!

I moved from Oxford not having a allotment, to Bristol 4 years ago, and waited 4 months before getting my first allotment after going on the list in July 2011.
I have just had my first full year and it's great.

It took about five and a half years to get my half  plot.

On our site you can go on the list for another, but you have to take your turn waiting with everyone else. I've just gone on the Committee so I guess I'll find out how bad the waiting list is. There are about 110 plots on our site, and last year about 7-8 came up for re-letting.

I work a plot as a buddy as my sister in law had her name down for a plot for about a year then when one became available she was undecided if she still wanted one I offered to help her and the local council put me down as a buddy. I am now in my third year and the sister in law has never been to the plot so as from next season it will be transferred into my name .
So if your local allotment allow buddies it's well worth exploring.

About two months, after which the new rental year started so it was a case of how many would be giving up at the end of this year. I was fourth on the waiting list but when the new rental year started a couple of dozen people gave up so I got a nice half plot with an existing shed, not too many weeds and even crops still in the ground which I could harvest straight away. It appears that one part of the plot has had a greenhouse or similar structure on it at some point as the ground on half the plot was compacted really hard and had a lot of broken glass in it. Needless to say I have managed to get it into a cultivatable state now.

living in Leeds you can imagine the waiting lists for the available spaces.  I was waiting for a couple of years with no luck.  One day I was walking past a site that I assumed was a council one and just popped in to enquire.  Put my name down but was told I was quite a way down.  Within a year they rang me and offered a plot.  Strange thing is within a week or so of accepting that one, the council sent me an email to offer one of their plots as well.

I could have been greedy but decided to pass it up to allow another to reap the benefits. :)

Six years. Would have been less, but one of the two sites was found to have contaminated soil and shut down. Those plot holders were therefore put to top of waiting list for the remaining site. Worth the wait though, got beautifully tended plot with double greenhouse, shed and pond in situ.
