Medlar Fruit question

We bought our first Medlar Tree recently :). When is the Medlar fruit ripe and when do you harvest them from the tree? Thanks

Hi Purplejaguar,

Harvest the fruit in November and then store them in a cool dry place to ripen. Out of interest, has your recently purchased tree got fruit on it?

Hiya, ok thanks. Another couple of weeks then. Does it matter to the fruit if it gets frosty?
Yep, its got a few fruits on it, its only a little tree at the mo though lol.
Do you know how big they get?
Thanks :)

Hi purplejaguar,

Good luck with your little tree! :) The fruit doesn't like frost. I've created this link to the RHS advice page on medlars and very informative it is too. It answers a lot of questions that you may have in the future.

Thanks for that, I will go have a look. I am also intrigued as to what they will taste like. We might be in for some frost in the next few days so should I harvest them before Nov in this case?
Does anyone know how big the tree will eventually get?

When you store Medlars to 'blet', put them face down

Bletting is the term used for ripening medlars.

We had one once. You have to let them blett (this is a fancy word for "go rotten") before they are edible. Definitely an acquired taste, but very pretty tree.
