What pests and disease have you had this year?
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:30 »
This year has been an unusual growing year with my veg suffering various pests and diseases some of which I haven't encountered before: -

Over wintered onions - mildew
Normal onions - mildew
Spring onions - mildew
Over wintered garlic - rust
Broad beans - chocolate spot
Broad beans - blackfly
Courgettes - mildew
Squash - mildew

Other
Sweet corn - slow to ripen
Peppers - slow to ripen
All veg - slugs and snails from August onwards. No problem earlier in the year.

I think some of the issues were down to the weather. The onion mildew appears to have been passed on from the winter effected plants, perhaps they were diseased sets in the first place!

What other pests and disease have you encountered? Anyone got any advice on prevention during the next growing season?

Onions & garlic – rust
Brassicas – whitefly, caterpillars, pigeons, slugs
Potatoes – some slugs, some scab & some weird rot affair which decimated my Golden Wonder
Courgettes – mildew but not really a problem
Carrots – carrot root fly
Salad leaves - slugs
Butternut Squash – Gummy Stem Blight

And a rat!

Dont forget the cabbage white butterfly!!!

The mesh I had on my brassicas wasnt fine enough to stop them.

Anybody want any green lace doilies?

Cabbage white caterpillars, generic caterpillars on peas and peppers, blackfly, aphids, flea beetles, some other unidentified small beetles on brassicas, slugs, snails, leafminers, rose chafer grubs. You name it, I had it.
As for diseases, I think I only got some powdery mildew on the courgettes, which was quite easy to deal with.

Just some pests, only disease was some blight towards the end of the tomatoes

Whitefly and caterpillars spoiled my cauliflowers and calabrese; debris netting does not work.

 >:(

Scale insect had a big impact on my blackcurrants; anybody got suggestions on what I can use as a winter tar wash?

i have learned that slugs REALLY REALLY like yellow courgettes. much more than green ones. think they thought it was their birthday. had to resort to those organic slug pellets. still don't trust them - far too blue. one of the courgette plants died. i blame the pellets obviously not my lack of courgette nurturing.

OH and those really tiny snails that hide in your cabbages and eat them to nothing.... they think its a game. i am not laughing.

squashes have just rotted in all the rain. yuk thats a nasty smell eh?

other than that not too bad. just the usual slug battles. i say that but i never do much about them. trying to live in harmony. i just wish they would leave some for me sometimes. selfish so and sos.  on the plus side i had proper frog spawn in my pond for the first time this spring.  not many survived but i am hoping for a population explosion this year.

Cabbage root fly, flea beetle, cabbage white butterfly (investing in better netting next year!), wireworm, snails, slugs, slugs, slugs and more slugs...

Boytris in greenhouse, blight right at the end of the season, mildew on squash/pumpkins right at end of season

Greenfly, whitefly

Just about anything that will eat toms, chillies and peppers

oh god, everything you can think of!!!!
But my catapiller situation wasn't as bad as last yr. Perhaps something to do with forgetting to sow and then plant out my brassica's until much later (how can anyone forget to sow cabbages, brocoli and cauli's how dense does someone have to be!!!)

Always thankful for advice!
