Apple Tree Woodlice infestation
« on: October 17, 2010, 17:59 »
Hi all

I have had a good crop from my 4 apple trees this year but have had a problem with woodlice. Each of the trees and their supports were treated with tree grease but still woodlice appears at the stalk end of the apple. Does anybody know how they might get there and what can be done to prevent any future infestation.

Thanks

Robert

Woodlice feed on dead organic material, so make sure there is no deadwood on the trees or on the ground nearby. Have a good tidy up and they should disappear.

Hi fatcat,

thanks for your reply; there is certainly no dead wood in the trees, although there is probably some lying around on the ground, so I will have a clear-up there. What I can't understand is how they get from the ground to the fruit, 4ft above ground, managing to traverse the tre grease on both the tree and its support.

Had them nibbling at my apples this year never seen them do that before. The ground round about was clear and I can only assume this lot were mutant energetic climbers :D

hi, are they causing any damage? woodlice only feed on decaying organic matter, so any initial damage would be probably birds or slugs. only then the woodlice would take over. hope this is of some help ::)
