Broad Beans
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:30 »
I intend to sow broad beans at the end of this month.  They are going in where squash and pumpkin have been harvested. The ground was well manured last autumn, what would be best to dress the ground with, bfb or chicken pellets? I have plenty of both.
Or should I put off using fertiliser until spring?
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

If the soil was well manured for the last crop I would not add any fertiliser either now or in the Spring.

You want the beans to just emerge and stay with a couple of tough leaves until the Spring. Do not be in a hurry to plant them. I plant mine on 5th November.

I agree with Salmo --- too much feed will lead to too much growth and they may well be cut down then by hard frosts/ice. :D

Feed in the spring when they get going again (I used pelleted chicken manure this year in March and that seemed to work well)

PS Aiming to sow mine a bit later this year too -- about 13/14th Nov
