Suggestions for small fruit trees
« on: October 16, 2010, 17:57 »
I would like to plant two small fruit trees at the top of my plot. I really need them to stay under 6ft tall so they don't overshadow other things (I share the plot with a neighbour). Preferably pears or plums - any ideas?

Thanks!

The crucial thing will be the rootstock - ensure you have a dwarfing rootstock for each.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I don't know about pears...but the smallest rootstock for plums is Pixy and this results in a tree that's about 10ft at maturity.

Hmm - that would be a bit too tall to be honest.

Any ideas for a different fruit perhaps?

Pear trees can be a bit of a handful as well, even on a dwarfing rootstock and you're likely to end up with at least 9-10 feet high at maturity. If you put them in a large container to restrict root growth you might be OK but you would have to do additional feeding and watering and be severe with your pruning.

I think that the only really dwarfing rootstocks available are for apples.  There are many varieties available on the M27 rootstock, which can be trained as 'step-over' trees and could certainly be kept below 6ft.
