Bamboo stick
« on: October 15, 2010, 19:53 »
Hi everyone,
I have been  meaning for some time to find out if it would be possible to grow one's own bamboo to supply the allotment with enough bamboo canes to set up support for beans, peas etc.... thus avoiding further trips to the garden centre...

Would any of you do this already?  If so, do you know which variety is most suitable for that

Thanks in advance
Laurence

Hi

I have grown many different types and the best I find is Spectabilis, it grows well.
But do keep under control - they all can take over.

Hi! Many thanks for your quick response! That's great news... I will give these a go then and find out when they can be planted! And I will do my best to get the right stuff to limit their ambitions :)
Many thanks!

I have been recomended that Pseudosasa Japonica is the one to go for by the specialist nursery I approached.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I have been thinking about this too, a clump forming variety would be best I think. someone gave me a tip of colour coding the stems so you can work out which ones to cut and when. If I remeber rightly they said to use 3 colours in rotation and you would cut each in turn and then dry for another year. Not a quick project though although wonder if some varieties may be quicker growing to maturity?
