Have not heard of Oca or Strawberry Popcorn!

Tomatillo this year - not that unusual but very successful - now wondering what to do with it all!

I had loads of tomatillos last year. I made salsa verde. Still got 2 pots in the freezer!!

Oca are like south american potatoes. Grow in a similar way but have a lemony taste to them.
The popcorn is suposed to be purely ornamental. But given its name I decided to dry it and have a go 'popping' it. It worked of a fashion and was bright red!! Had lots of cobs left still hanging from last year. Hamster seems to enjoy them!!

Thank you for that I am enlightened now - like the sound of Oca - do you grow from sedd and where did you get them from.
As for the salsa Verde - I have made some - how well does it freeze?   I have a couple of kilos sitting on my worktop at the moment - although mine will be salsa púrpura as I chose the purple tomatillos.

I grew those this year too - the flowers were beautiful too and the bees loved them, I grew the white/yellow ones last year and wanted a mix, but I think the mice liked those seeds!

Ginger.   :)

I'd be interested to know how you get on with the ginger.  I was thinking of giving it a go but read up on it and don't think I have enough experience yet to deal with it.

Oca ( still waiting to harvest)

Lunga di Napoli  (huge squash up to 50lb)

Purple podded peas   ( very pretty flowers, taste like marrowfat peas)

Tomatillo ( no idea what to do with them, will try the salsa verde)

Everlasting onions (great for winter salads)

Tree onion  (not very successful  but may perform better next year)

Asparagus pea (Delicious steamed, pick often and cook immediately)

There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Not much unusual stuff.

Jerusalem and globe artichokes (are they unusual though?), and salsify might qualify.

Had our first harvest of salsify at the weekend and it was delicious.
 :D

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

tried a lot and grew few.
the best were dudhi (calabash -  a squash variety) and garden huckleberry.
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Chickweed

Yes, seriously I'm now growing chickweed to eat. Last night on tv Richard Corrigan ( Irish chef ) used it to make a lovely salad so today I tasted some and it was delicious .... a little like cress.

I now have two trays in the tunnel.  ::) ::)

American Land Cress .
Gives an interesting extra dimension to your salad and doesn't need running water. The flavour is like a pretty strong cress.  Great in a mixed salad but a bit hot on its own.
