Advice please, Nelly's not well
« on: October 13, 2010, 12:31 »
She's been off for a few days, thought must be due a soft shell.  She's an ex batt that I've had for just over a year, and has had soft shell probs in the past.

Now wants to constantly be in the nest box, so I thought egg bound?  So did the warm bath thing last night and just repeated it now.  She has passed a bit of poo in the night and still taking some food and water.

Now noticed her abdomen is very swollen, feels fluidy.  So wondering peritonitis?

Not sure what to do.  Any advice please?

Our vet is great with dogs, but not so knowing re chooks, think they will just suggest put her down.

Just adding a PS, noticing Kathies post.  Tips of Nells comb are purple too, and cold to touch.

Made a vets appointment.   She's hardly moved all afternoon and even refused tinned sweetcorn.  Am expecting the worst. :(

Sorry to hear about Nelly FP.  Not an unusual story I'm affraid, exbatts have a hard life with intensive laying they seldom come away without some problems and scars from their former life.  With chicken keeping you have to take the rough with the smooth and be philosophical.  I expect you'll spare her a thought tomorrow while you're sitting on your sunflower cushion :)

Best wishes

Thank you.

You're right HF, I will be thinking of her today, and no doubt shedding a few more tears :( My sunflower cushion is getting worn and faded, but it's still my favourite place to be :)

I am so so sorry. Without you having her she would never have known what it is like to be a normal happy chicken, while you had her she had a lovely time and was able to feel the sun on her back.  :(

Thank you, all of you.  You are all very kind.  She did enjoy life here with the others. Such a friendly and inquisitive little bird.  Here she is joining in a worm hunt.  Mad for tomatoes and always had an eye for my diamond ring.  Proper girly girl. :D
