Bleeding stubs of tail feathers what to do????
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:41 »
One of our Poland has been a very big bully >:( and pulled out the most docile Poland's tail feathers :(, and now there is  about 6 blooming stumps and shaft left  and no clue what to do. we removed (pom pom) from the rest so they would not peck at the blood and put her with some babies but now what???

that will be painful!

You can get some purple spray from any good pet shop and spray that on which will prevent the others from pecking it. Well that's the theory

If it's bad you'll need to get some antibiotics from the vet. It's a good idea to set yourself up with a vet anyway as you'll probably need to see one at some point in your chicken keeping career  :)

Someone knowledgeable will be here shortly to answer your question in more detail. We have some very learned poultry peeps on here who will be able to guide you.

I also use UKADEX which helps keep the others away as it stinks like pig poop, and is also a dark brown so will cover the redness.

To stop it bleeding quickly, some of the others on here sprinkle cornflour on the blood.

I also use vaseline with tea tree oil mixed in.  It helps it heal, although it doesn't hide the redness, but the smell of the oil seems to keep mine away.  Even works with the turkeys at times!

Don't worry CQ even more ideas will surface shortly!

It seems to me that different birds dislike different things!  UKADEX doesn't very often work on the turkeys, they seem to dislike the vaseline and tea tree oil more, but it works on most of the chickens!  Especially if one still insists on pecking, then its wandering around the run wiping its beak trying to get rid of the taste!

I used a clear spray product called Featherite, got in on line.  It must taste awful, as always stops any pecking.
Purple spray will disguise the red.

Is UKADEX suitable to apply to an open wound?  Personally I'd go for Gentian (or Purple as CQ says) spray which disguises the blood and is an anti fungicide and antiseptic.  Worked on one of the turkeys wing feathers GA.

Best regards

if the bully still keeps on pulling feathers out you could try fitting a beak clip to them, they can still eat and drink but not close their beaks onto a feather.
Staffies are softer than you think.
