Just wondering how much garlic to plant - we use a lot but I dont want to plant so much that it goes off or starts to sprout before we use it. Roughly how long should I expect hard neck and softneck garlic to keep for. I can then calculate how much we use in that time. What quantity do others plant?

I bought 3 bulbs in a pack and that gave me 40 cloves to plant out. If all 40 cloves mature and give me ten cloves to a bulb, that's 400 cloves - more or less 1 a day for a year.

If it helps I was still eating Solent White at the end of March.......I only had to stop eating them then cos I ran out

If it makes you feel better, I was still eating mine from last year in June - after giving loads away.

I hang mine up similar to onions, and they do really well

And if they do sprout, pot them up.

I bought a kilo. about 100 cloves, if I get over 70 I'll be happy, and will re-sow the rest.

and if you get too much make garlic oil/ lazy garlic/passata (freeze it) really you cant have too much

Thanks for the replies - I grew about 80 last year, some were very small so the Mrs got fed up trying to peel them. I had about 60 decent sized ones and after giving some to family and using some to plant I can see me running out by the end of Jan. I planted 150 at the weekend so should be ok next year.

So long as you're careful to avoid botulism, I make my passata with just a bit of salt added to the tomatoes, nothing else then I can make it into whatever sauce or pizza base I want.

Pickled garlic cloves are fantastic! I can eat 20 cloves at a time of that stuff. I'm not quite sure how it works, but it doesn't leave you with horrific garlic breath at all  :blink:
