digging in lettuces etc??
« on: October 10, 2010, 08:56 »
Hi can anyone tell me if it is ok to dig in lettuces, carrot tops, beet tops ect into my beds?

If so is there anything i should not dig in?

I dont have room for a compost heap and hate just throwing in the brown recycle bin.
My theory was this would feed my worms :) :)

Thanks all :)

They'll just rot down, so no problems.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Generally you're OK, just avoid anything diseased.

Reading this reminded me of something to ask.
Some of my courgettes were rotting on the plants so I picked them off, to encourage new fruit, and have been throwing the manky ones into the compost bin. Is this Ok or should I have been putting them out with the rubbish instead?
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

I believe the only thing you should really avoid putting in compost bin is anything with blight, ie infected toms or spuds :)
If im wrong someone will correct me but you should be ok :)

hows this for a worm feeder ,       cut a 6" or 4"plastic waste pipe about 30"long stand it in the bed you want to feed so that 6" is in the ground and 24"standing up,     fill it up with your waste veg and put a cap over the top   (this could be a bit of cloth or sacking with a elastic round)      the worms will go in the tube to feed and go back out and spread the good stuff around and they will then use it as a feeding station when they are hungry .
just take off the top and refill put top back on to keep the flies off  :)

                                 |    |  tube above ground
                                 |    |
                                 |    |
                                 |    |
```````````````` |    | ```````````````````````````
                                          tube below ground
digalotty - does this work? I have a feeling the length of pipe would mean the veggies dry out if you get a lot of dry weather so the veg wouldn't rot down, just dry out.
How about a large plant pot buried in the ground with a rain lid on top - fill with veg waste and replace lid. As the veggies rot down, worms will come in to feed via the drainage holes in the plantpot.
I use this method as watering pots for things like runner beans and squashes. I place Comfrey leaves in the pots as liquid feeds whenever the pots are filled with water.
ahh ok. I might give this a go.  It sounds like a comfrey press I have attached to the shed. From the bottom up: collecting bottle, funnel catching Comfrey juice from a four foot long 4-inch downpipe full of Comfrey leaves with a bottle of water on top to keep the leaves pressing as they rot - makes lovely stuff!
