A disaster has occured !!!!!
« on: October 07, 2010, 21:33 »
 >:( Now as some of you know I am new to all of this never having planted anything before in my life. I spent a large amount of my time at the weekend planting Spinach and   sprouting brocolli only to walk down the garden today that all my leaves have been eaten from my brocolli   but none of the spinach had been touched. I have since put a load of chicken wire round ( after the horse has bolted I know ) but do you good people think it is mr rabbit or birds, also they have eaten the leaves on the plants but the shoots are still ok so should I dig them up and start again or see if they will re grow? Sorry for the questions but I really am a complete novice at all this.

Kind regards

Dave

Sounds like birds, pigeons love brassicas.

Don't just put the wire round, put it over.

They should recover if the central growing tip is OK, however, it's a serious set back at this time of year when things will stop growing soon.

You have nothing to lose if you protect them well.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I always try and put some sort of deterrent near the brassicas.
What I use are old crisp bags (or similar) where, if you turn them inside out, the inside is "silvery". Tie a piece of string between two sticks then, using smaller pieces of string, tie them to the inside-out bags and hang them from the main string. The silver bags flapping about in the wind do the trick for me.

I did actually make a scarecrow once but it failed to have the desired effect!
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

I'm sorry to report that this is exactly what the old timers use on our site and their cabbages are eaten half to death .......mine are netted so are not  ;)

I tried CD's.

The pigeons had their lunch as soon as I went for mine. The only way is a physical barrier.

The pigeons on our site are so full of cabbage they can't fly. They just stroll up and down the paths as if they were in Tescos.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

It's not a disaster!  You might think it is but it's not. Your cabbages got munched  :D

You have to dust yourself off and start again. This gardening lark comes with many failures I'm afraid to say. You'll develop a thick skin before you get a colander full of brocolli  :D

I spent hours making myself a timber frame to cover my beloved cabbage plants. It had metal corners and lovely green netting stapled to it.  A thing of beauty indeed and would stop those pesky pigeons/pheasants/partridges/badgers/deer in their tracks!  First it blew away  :nowink: Then I fixed it down with a hundred bricks only to turn my back and find that a fat pheasant had sat on the netting and it had given way and the darn thing was in there having its dinner

It's a jungle out there. Don't despair though as you will have many successes, I guarantee it  :)

Hi

Both last winter and all this season our brassicas have fallen victim to pigeons.  We have found the single best way to keep them away is to put up a bird scarer.  My husband cut a windmill effect thing out of a foil disposible bbq.  Noisy and reflective and my brassicas soon recovered to provide the best caulis we have ever grown.

Certainly will be employing my other half to produce some again next year :)

Why make life more difficult for yourselves turning crisp bags and making windmills ;) :D

Just put a net over them and be done with it.   ::)

Sorry, I've had a bad day ::)
