It's not just veg, we have all the fresh cut flowers we can use from May to October, with our own dried flowers to follow.

we had the first thing i've ever grown yesterday (a courgette) and my husband pointed out that this 1 courgette had cost us £750!!!

What with the greenhouse, base being laid and contruction, all the accesories, seeds compost and tools he was right!!! Still mean of him to poor cold water on all my excitement tho'!!!

Look on the bright side tho' todays courgette was free!!!!!  :D    :D

Don't worry about start up costs. I bought my fork, spade, and rake about 45 years ago for around £3. A lot of money then.I reckon they might be broken in in another year or so.I have bought sheds in the past ,but prefered to build my own, much cheaper and you get one suited to your needs. My last one lasted 35years until I moved.I just bought another one on Ebay to adapt because at £50 it was cheaper than buying the wood.Whatever you pay one day like me you will smile at how little it cost though at the time you thought it was pricey.

Cost of seed £20.
Cost of lottie £50
Cost of shed £200.
Cost of Seeing your own grown veg on the table and no Chemicals etc. PRICELESS

I paid £4500.My brother in law got a mortgage costing £32 a month fixed for the full term. His rent at the time was £28. We all thought he was mad and that he would never be able to pay the extra. That was about 1966.He still lives in the house now and its worth around £350,000.Not that he would ever move.So pay up with a smile one day it will be laughable and other younger people will say "its alright for you everything is so expensive nowadays. Not like when you started" If only they knew.

and 'fried squid' to you as well!

I save a few seeds but don't bother with most.  I'd save some garlic, parsley, sweet pea & a few potatoes for an old variety that is impossible to buy.  Always some self-seeders too : calendula, godetia, nasturtium

Is harvesting seeds as easy as you'd think it should be? Do you just dry them out?

For many yes, but read all 228 pages Suzanne Ashworth's 'Seed to Seed' on saving veg seed and it can seen be to be quite complicated if to want to save nearly everthing.

Hello, first post here.

I would say that you can spend as much or as little as you want.
We have been given two sheds and a 12' greenhouse in the last year, so just keep an eye on freecycle :D

I dont mind drying flower seeds but over the years I have had some disappointing results with vegetables. The worse part is you dont know until they fail to germinate or they crop far less,by which time you have lossed valuable time. For this reason I bite the bullet and buy every season. There are always bargains to be had if you look around. 8)
