Rhubarb
« on: September 29, 2010, 17:01 »
In august time i was kindly given some rhubarb plants, i placed them in a corner and forgot about them, however when i went to clear the bramble which had over grown in that area i forgot they were there and ended up tredding on te leaves/stalk/foliage, whatever its called.

Will thy recover or have I efffectivley killed them? :(
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Give it a shovel of manure or compost, to encourage it, and it should do just fine

It si said that the practice of forcing rhubarb came about when someone dug out an old ditch and dumped the rubbish on top of dormant rhubarb only to find it did better than ever before the next year.
I dont think you will have done any harm. Just remember when you come to pull it next year that the brambles might be coming back under the leaves so watch your fingers

Leave the leaves / stalks on the plant.  They will die down naturally in winter and resprout in spring.

There is another thread ongoing at present about harvesting rhubarb.  General advice is to stop harvesting by the end of June, so as to allow the plant several months of ordinary growth to rebuild its strength for the following year.  Others happily harvest into autumn.

What I would not recommend is removing all of the leaves in summer.  It prevents the plant from building itself up again, and will lead to a poorer crop the next year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
