Pea pods not swelling
« on: September 25, 2010, 08:34 »
I have a row of Kelvedon Wonder peas that produced masses of flowers and masses of decent-sixed pods but vast majority of the pods have not swelled into decent-sized peas and have just sat there like that for about the last two weeks or so. The plants look healthy and they certainly aren't short of rain water, living where I do, so I was just wondering if they have given up the effort for some strange reason.
Would they be OK to eat them as mangetout?
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

I think the problem is warmth, or lack of it.

I've got some late sown ones of the same variety, and just getting some off them now, but they're very slow to fill. I'd think it's a bit nippier up there as well!

As for mange tout, I think they'd be a little too fiberous for that. If nothing is spoiling, I think waiting is the only option.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for the response.

It most certainly does get nippy up here; particularly when the wind blows from the north. Any peas I try to grow have to like it or lump it so I guess that these have lumped it.

I don't really have any other alternative other than to leave them but they do look good and healthy so I am surprised. Still, I do have a decent crop already in the freezer so these would have been a late bonus.

Mine are just starting to get a bit of mildew, I bet you've not got that problem!

Nope - I haven't noticed that here.

Some of the peas that have been in contact with the ground tend to rot quickly due to the regular deluges of rain that we can get here. I try to avoid that but, however much staking I do, the winds knock my pea plants around a bit.
