early mornings
« on: September 24, 2010, 08:49 »
We have had our 4 chickens since last weekend , I dont know how old they are ( or even what they are lol ) , they have been laying ever since we got them , well 1 hasnt  but dont know how I can tell which one ?

My question is really about letting the out in the morning , I leave for work at 6.30 am and they have been ready to go out then , this morning it was a bit darker and they werent so keen ! I assume its going to be ok to always opening up early even as it gets colder and darker?

hello, we are the same - we open up the coop most mornings at 6.15 as we also leave for work early.  They dont particularly like being turfed out on dark mornings as chickens cant see very well in poor light, but on the coldest mornings a bowl of warm porridge is usually enough to entice them out no matter what!  We do let them out later at weekends though.
You can get timed/automatic door openers for around £100 I believe but we've not bothered with this yet...

If you open the door before you go to work and then they can go out when they want to.

I agree just open the door and they will let themselves out when ready.
As for who isn't laying - well they could all lay most hens do not lay every day so if you are averaging 3 eggs a day from 4 hens the chances are they are all laying  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

we are getting 2 larger egss and 1 slightly smaller or just the 2 larger , I assumed that the larger hens were laying the larger eggs , but saw one of the smaller hens come out of the box , so much for that theory . I am trying to work out what breeds they are , 2 are what i call common or garden brown hens .hybreds? , 2 are sort of blacky brown speckled  is there anywhere they provided pictures to compare ?

Dont they ''cluck a doodle cluck a doodle cluck'' when they've laid - thats how we tell which one of ours has laid?

Mine don't make any noises when they lay so I am not surprised if yours don't either. And don't think that the largest hen lays the largest egg - my smallest lays the largest egg.... hurts my eyes!
I do love my ladies  ::)

I have one of these and she is lovely - she laid 5 eggs a week until she got to be 3 and now lays about 3 or 4 a week  :D

My one layer makes a funny chattering noise whilst rearranging the nest box and then lays quietly later.

I've the auto door opener and closer.  Been a godsend whilst I've been ill

The ones we have now don't shout when they lay but our first ones made a frightful racket for about 10 minutes before and after they laid :( but luckily they laid about 2pm so no complaints from the neighbours  :D

The 11 we have now chatter quietly all the time though :D

Have you ever stood outside the chook house after locking them in for the night, listening to them chatting. I think its the loveliest amazing thing Ive ever heard. Id really love to know what they're saying.
"Ere Blondie, did you see that big worm I dug up this morning?"
"Mother was a bit mean with the treats today dont you think"
"Oi Monty, stop that farting"
"I can feel a large one up the pipe, I think I'll be laying a double yolker tomorrow!"
