Araucanas or not?
« on: September 22, 2010, 07:20 »
Can anyone help please. I got 4 araucana pullets at an chaarity auction a couple of weeks ago, but i think they are crosses not pure, i did think this when i got them although the 'lot' said araucana pullets. I cant for the life of me find my connection leads for my phone and was wondering if there is a kind soul who would host some pics for me so one of our lovely eggsperts could help identify cross or not and if they are indeed pullets??
Many thanks

sorry but I'm no good with photo's and don't have a photo mobile either, but what makes you think they are crosses?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hello joy, well one of them have little yellow streaks on her back, and none  of them have top knot. They are lavender but feathers are scruffy looking. i just don't have the experience to tell realy. They have arau tails though!! Also they dont look like the one i hatched earlier this year. I don't mind but would just be interested to know thats all. i might try asking my son to put pics on for me, would love to know what you think.

not all have top knots, the streaks sound a bit dubious though - perhaps they are younger than pullets and not got their adult feathers completely yet. Do they have the little combs? How old are they? Can't wait to see the photos  :)

Supposed to be 20 wks but no where near i think. Let them all out in the garden this morning and got some pics so hopefully will be able to post tomorrow as have found phone leads and my son is going to show me what to do. One of them has a few feathers on the legs similar to a silkie?? Got a feeling my silkies are all boys as well.

Right, here are your pics Banty!  Although they do look like araucanas, like you said, their heads don't look like any of mine!  Too slim looking.  So you may be right, they could be crosses.

But, even if they are, they are lovely girls and will probably still lay you green or greeny blue eggs!!

I would say crosses too, their beaks don't look "vulture like" enough to me, araucanas seem to have quite an evil look . They are pretty though and as Annie said the egg colour should hopefully be blue, green or olive depending on what the father was. I bought 3 so called black aras - they even have small top knots but they turned out to be crosses as well and lay normal fleshy coloured eggs . These 3 are now called Miss sold, Miss Stake and Miss Led  ::)

Thank you both joy and ann, i wasn't sure, the last pick is the one with yellowy streaky bits (must have gone to the hairdresser on a trainee day) and one has feathery legs. Do you think boys/girls or wait and see?? Hmm wait and see. The only bit about them anything like my little rosie is the tail and like you say joy the head is not hawky enough. What do you think they could be crossed with? Pekins/Silkies? I'm not to bothered as long as they are girlies, any thoughts on age?? Hopefully tomorrow i will be able to get some pics of my other girls on..Have 21 now..who said they were addictive? And i love your names joy might have to pinch them, and add one for myself like miss got carried away at an auction
