Honda GX140 will only run with choke on
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:47 »
Hi

I have a small petrol engine comopressor powered by a Honda GX140 engine. Starts first time, runs perfectly appart from even after a long running time, if I start to move the choke from full on to anywhere toward the off the engine cuts out.

The engine (as far as I can see) is in perfect condtion, I even have the owners manual and

http://engines.honda.com/parts-and-support/owners-manuals/gx140

and have double checked the set-up

I have even double checked that the lever is doing/showing what the choke butterfly is correct.

Appart from that the engine runs fine, no smoke and plenty of power.

Any advice?

Thanks

It's not an uncommon problem!
There are two things to check. Firstly, undo the oil filler cap, and make sure that it's not overfilled. ( fuel can fill up the oil sump, if the petrol tap is left on when the machine is transported, or is left on for prolonged periods of time.)
secondly, dirty fuel can block the main jet in the carb. you would need to undo the nut on the very bottom of the carb, (turn fuel tap off first!), remove the first part of the jet with a slot screwdriver from the centre tube, and then remove the brass tube from within. clean the tube and the jet, replace and you should find it'll work off of choke.

enjoy. :)

Thanks

I bought it as a non runner, and found the problem to be a blocked main jet (gum /varnish) on cleaning the jet it started.

I suspect then as you say some other part still is gummed up a bit.

I have tried turning the only adjusting screw on the carb and it has no effect.

So carb cleaner I think might be needed??

Re reading your post Gwiz about the jet cleaning I note I removed what I throught was the jet, it was blocked solid, but I did not clean out the other brass bit that was left in the carb.

A job for tonight

some times the tube will stick and not drop out.If this happens, look into the intake past the choke flap and you will see the top end of the tube sticking up,,press on it to push it out but be carefull not to damage it.

Well I cleaned all jets out, checked fuel was getting through Ok, tried all settings on adjustement screw and it still will onlyrun on choke.

But I did note that on tick-over it will run on choke it is when you increase revs it dies out.

I am suspecting spark plug so have bought another one and will test again.

No getting any where with this.

I have fully cleaned the carb with a full can of carb cleaner, new spark plug, new fuel bowl, new inner gasket.

Fully flushed the petrol tank etc etc etc.

One thing I have noted is on tickover it will run with the choke fully OFF, but as soon as I up the revs it dies...does this give a clue?

I have fully tightened everything down, and can not see where an air leak might be.

There is just ONE adjusting screw on the unit and I have tried it in every postion, it makes not difference.

Any more advice pleas?

Did you clean the jet under the plasic tick over screw?
If not, unscrew it all the way out then prise out the plastic piece underneath and clean the tiny hole in the bottom end of it.I use a fine single strand of copper wire stripped from a multi stranded cable .

It stll sounds like a blocked carb.
Sometimes carb cleaner doesn't work on it's own, you need a lot of compressed air as well, other times  carbs need to be completely stripped and spend an hour in an ultra sonic cleaning tank.

I think I am going to leave it alone!

For the duty it is used for, (a compressor) and the times I will use it, it is not worth spending any more time or money on it.

The only way one can tell if the jet is unblocked is to push the fine wire through from the bottom and observing it through the larger hole running at 90 degrees to the jet drilling.

I have had bit of fine fuse wire in every hole going and seen it out both sides!

Thanks gwiz for the offer, but I feed up with taking the engine out to get the carb off.

Even worse, with the money I have spent on a can of carb cleaner, new plug, new bown, new gaskets, I could have got a brand new (not Honda) full carburetor. >:(
